How can a small guy build muscle quick?

Question by Don: How can a small guy build muscle quick?

I’m 18, 5’9 and i weigh 130lbs. I am slim and have little body fat and I work out 3 days a week. I also take creatine once before I workout and once after. The guys at the gym suggest eating more so I can gain weight otherwise I will look like Bruce Lee. What do you guys suggest is the quickest way to put on muscle? I know it is possible because my brother was my size but is now very muscular and I see the many bonuses the muscles bring him. Also how much pounds of muscle do you guys think I can put on in 3 weeks?

1. Ask your brother what he does.
2. To grow you have to eat more than you burn off.
3. In 3 weeks, not too much.

You can blow your brother away if you drop arm work and start doing squats and nothing but compound movements.

Muscle usually takes about 6-8 weeks to show. Go to the gym and lift, and push-ups are underrated. Do a set of like 25 during the commercial breaks, or right before breakfast, before bed, anything… whatever you do, do it consistently.

  2. Well I hate to break this to you, but the human body can only gain a maximum of 1lb of lean muscle a week. This is of course without the use of steroids or other illegal drugs. Personally there is nothing wrong with how Bruce Lee looked. Many a body builder dream of having abs like his. Try working out 4 days a week and not doing any cardio for a 6-8 week period. Gains will not come quickly, but they will show themselves with hard work.

You need to eat a lot and lift heavy. I would check out “Starting Strength” by Mark Rippetoe. In order to put on muscle, you need to eat a lot more calories than you expend,

Since you are young and a newbie, you can probably gain about 2 lbs of lean mass per week if you eat about 1k calories above maintenance and lift hard. This a long road and there are no short cuts. It’s simple, but it ain’t easy.

By strange coincidence I just watched the movie ‘Bronson’ tonight, and the slim actor Tom Hardy managed to put muscles on muscles in a very short period of time while preparing for the title role.

Check out the movie, it’s in the extras – or just Google and see if you can find any related literature there, I’m sure you will.

I don’t know exactly how much you can put on in 3 weeks, but I’d say a good amount. My brother-in-law is a body builder and when he gets ready for competition he eats a very high protein diet. He might have one egg and 3 egg whites for breakfast, a chicken breast and 1/2 sweet potato (nothing on it, just plain), and then either the same for dinner or replacing the potato with broccoli or else he’ll eat 3-4 ounces of broiled fish (no fat added). He’s really strict about his diet. He also drinks a protein shake right after working out (he does not wait). And of course lots of water. He insists that the high protein and weight lifting 5 days/week creates all his muscles. Last show he came home with 3 trophies including best in show! But that is a very hard eating plan to stick with and initially may make you not feel a little grumpy, so you have to be careful when you interact with people and realize what’s going on with yourself. You might not have to go that far as you didn’t say you wanted to compete, but my son does a modified version of this high protein diet and uses whey protein shakes a few times per day (after workout, for a snack, and then after dinner). He has what he calls six-pack abs! LOL! And he does. Good Luck and keep working out and increase that protein!

myoplex 42gram protein drink, yogurt, and plain peanut butter sandwich on wheat or rye before bed, workout early in am followed by another myoplex eggs and spinach, heavy lunch and dinner. try to eat more fish and dark meat chicken. eat heavy, not often, this slows your metabolism. do fewer reps with more weight, not too much overload be safe. and finally, a good multivitamin(s). good luck, and stay LEAN!
